An Alternative Christmas Song

Now the season of joy is upon us, all of us bloggers are writing festive posts. Whether youre taking part in Blogmas, special Christmas Linkies, writing about Santa visits, the best Christmas Jumpers on the market, your favourite Christmas Movies such as my post last week or your favourite Christmas tunes!

In case you’re getting a bit fed up of all this Christmas-ness or you’re running low of the festive cheer, I got to thinking of alternatives. Now I scrolled through all of the Christmas number ones since the start of the Charts in 1952 and have found a few crackers!

1) Lily the Pink – The Scaffold (1968)

Ever since I heard this song when I was to sing this with my stage school I have loved it. It is such a good old fashioned song that you can imagine singing along to in a pub with mates spilling your beer out of a tankard!

2) Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen (1975)

Do I need to explain how epicly amazing this tune is?!?!

3) Mr Blobby – Mr Blobby (1993)

I actually met the real Mr Blobby at a Christmas Party for the Young Variety Club (my Step-mum used to work for them) and I also saw the costume come off and was pretty  amazed that there was someone inside him! (I was seven years old)

4) Goodbye – Spice Girls (1998)

This song gets me right in the feels. I get goosebumps listening to it and a lump in my throat! For someone who was a Ginger Spice Fan, this was a devastating song; it was like I was grieving (I totally understood my sisters reaction to Take That splitting up!)

5) Killing in the Name – Rage Against the Machine (2009)

From around 2003 my inner Emo-kid came out. Skinny Jeans, farmer shirts, plastic jewellery and studded belts were my thing and my music went from S Club & and Steps to Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday and Straylight Run.

In 2006 I went to Uni, every Wednesday and Friday night this tune was amongst Guns ‘n’ Roses and Bon Jovi. Imagine how stoked I was that this finally beat the X Factor winners single after their three year continuation!

What are your favourite alternative Christmas number ones?

  1. Hi Mrs. Mummy Harris, I’m not a fan of alternative Christ mas number ones. I like the number one at Christmas to be festive and fun. Although Lilly The Pink and Bohemian Rhapsody are both classics that I enjoy, just not at Christmas time.

Thank you for linking up with the #MMBC.

  3. I never forgave Mr blobby for keeping take that off the top spot that year. I was fuming and ultimately as heartbroken as your sister when they split up. I’m not sure I have any alternative Christmas songs but for some reason there a cold play song (I can’t remember the name) that always reminds me of Christmas and I’m not even sure they released it any where near Christmas #kcacols
